I emailed Sarah Beetson after seeing some of her work at 'Pick Me Up' down in London last month, It appears as though she is a very busy woman with a lot of students asking her questions she will not have time to answer. She was very helpful and replied to my email with a list of resources for me to read through including lots of interviews in the hope that I could find any answers I was looking for.

“Hi there Jadine,

Thank you so much for your interest in my work.

I get about 20 student study requests per month - which is so wonderful and I am incredibly thankful that my work inspires you! Unfortunately I don't have the time to answer every question individually, so I have compiled this resource list in the hope you will be able to find all your answers.

I would be delighted if you could email me a copy of your project once completed?

Happy researching and all the very best of luck with your project!

Questions I wanted to ask her were:

You have managed to turn yourself in to a brand and you have an impressive C-V working for names such as Stella Mc Cartney, How did you go about marketing yourself after graduating from Falmouth College Of Arts in 2002?

And do you have any advice for graduates looking to follow in your footsteps?

What are your views in the current illustration Industry?...I found answers to my questions instantly

“Q11. From your experience in the arts, what advice could you offer people looking to get to where you are today?

Be prepared to work your pants off! You need 110% talent AND 110% persistence – you will have to go out and find your place in the world and it’ll take a lot of originally presented emails, mail outs, phone calls, grant applications, job applications, knocking on doors – even just to get 5 mins of somebody’s time who might potentially be able to help you. Don’t expect offers to fall in your lap upon graduation because they most likely won’t! But if you are talented and you put in the hard graft, you will eventually get there. It takes a lot of time and energy but I think it’s well worth it to eventually be living the dream!”

“Q7. In your career, what steps do you plan on taking to reach your goal?

I have been illustrating now for almost 10 years, so I believe
I have reached a comfortable point that I’d like to continue to build on. As an illustrator I am fairly established, but as an artist I am still emerging, so I will continue to exhibit in Australia and to tour my work overseas as much as possible. My boyfriend has almost completed a new studio building for me next to our house on the farm in Queensland, which will enable me to create works of a much larger scale. In 2012, I am hoping to full-fill a long-held dream of spending a summer
residency in Coney Island, New York – where I have gained much inspiration for my work over the years. I would like to compare some of the signage, the history of the area and the tourism over the years with my current hometown of The Gold Coast (Australia). This will depend on securing funding in order to do so.”

“Q3. How do you feel about your industry today?

I think the illustration industry has been enjoying immense popularity for the past 5 or 6 years. When I graduated in 2002, it seemed not so many design agencies, magazines and advertisements were using illustration, but since then there has been a massive resurgence on everything from packaging to window displays to fabric print. I hope that it continues to flourish.

The main themes I found from her answers in interviews are to work hard and be ambitious. But hey, tell me something I don’t know.

It’s just great to read about the journey of someone so successful. She hasn’t been afraid to move around the world or go out literally hunting for job opportunities. I think it is important for me to stay active after graduating and make sure I keep busy constantly approaching companies in the hope that one will be interested. Who knows what could happen, but it certainly won’t be anything exciting unless I get out there and persistently email, phone, and visit potential clients.

There is always more to do, even when you are as established as Sarah Beetson.
