The Big, Bad and Amazing world of illustration.

On monday 27th of March Ben Jones, a graduate from Stockport college, spoke to us about his experience of freelance illustration. He gave us insight in to all the different job opportunities such as editorials, book publishing and advertising. He told us it is very important that when you are promoting yourself, to pick the 'right' image as this will be the illustration that represents you. Sending out business cards and postcards to industries is still a very good way to get noticed. Although some companies are keeping illustrators information on computers, as well as Nicola Slater, he said that there are still many who will pin images they like up on a board, and select them when they are appropriate.
You need to stand out.
He explained that editorial work often requires a quick turnover with often only a few hours to present an idea, the images need to "clever and punchy". Advertising is similar in terms of time scale, but they do provide you with a much clearer idea of what they want (sometimes to the point where it seems as though you are colouring in), they are the bigger commissions, and pay well. with book publishing, you are given more time (maybe even a month), and sometimes more freedom too. You can literally be in control of everything that makes up a book cover/jacket.

He also told us that when you are given a brief from an art director, to try and not get bogged down with the 'story' so much. Try to look at the themes and atmosphere before you overcomplicate things and waste time trying to create a summary. Something I definitely need to remember! And I can put it in to practice with the new '8X8 Collaboration' Brief
