On Friday the 17th of February, Sophie Chatellier travelled up from London to do a workshop which would eventually lead to us creating our own unique hand rendered type. We were presented with a small stack of white A4 paper and were given a different word every five minutes. We could draw what ever we wanted, anything that came to mind when that word was spoken. Once we had completed this task we pinned all of our drawings up on the wall and took a look at what everybody else had produced.

From these 'doodles' we picked out elements we liked, for example, a nice texture created when drawing the bottom of a ripped skirt. Then we used these elements to form the letters of the alphabet. Each person interpreted the instructions differently but it led to some very interesting fonts.

I found the workshop very useful as I usually hesitate when it comes to producing a font, and feel as though I can not produce a typography that looks consistent. This taught me that is does not necessarily have to be consistent but interesting. It also gave me a starting point!!!
.......Always needed.
Thank you very much to Sophie for such a lovely day.
