Cindy Sherman

I have been writing an essay for university recently about Cindy Sherman and how she has influenced Postmoderm art and design. Her photography has always interested me and I must say that the time it has taken to write my essay, has completely flown by. Once I started writing I found it hard to stop. Her work has continued to challenge the generic representations of women and she has constantly reinvented herself in order to stay 'current'

"The feminists claimed her as theirs, as did the post-modernists, the post structuralists, the post everythings. But there was nothing clean or prescriptive about her art. Sherman's work has always been a vibrant mush of ideas"(Hattenstone, 2011, Online.)

The aspect of her work that I am particularly intrigued by, is the characters in her 'Untitled Film Stills" and how none of them have anything to do with Cindy Sherman's true identity but are literally figments of her imagination. The viewer is always left to wonder who on earth Cindy Sherman actually is!
