The Little White Lies brief.

I am currently working on a front cover for the film magazine 'Little White lies', through the D&AD 2012 illustration competitions.

Brief:

Create an original cover illustration for Little White Lies magazine, depicting the main character of one of our fivefavourite films of 2011.

The five films listed were: Drive, Black Swan, The Tree of Life, Super 8, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

I selected ‘The Tree of Life’ and I have been slowly picking at all of the meanings behind it, in order to find a theme that can be adapted in to the front cover. A reoccurring theme I have found is the idea of a Mother Earth and a Father Sky, and the journey through the life of two very different parents.

I gathered images of the earth/maps as well as patterns in the sky.

I then began drawing Sean Penn, although he is the actor who appears on screen the least, the story is framed by his character.

I have been re-working into photocopies with paint and coloured pencils in order to form the elements of the collage, and then layered my own drawings done with black ink. Here is my final image, eith the little white lies masthead in place.
