On Friday 20th of January, Bryony and Hannah formed a discussion about whether or not designers should work for free. It seems as though once people become aware of what you can do, they tend to ask for favours and don't think about how time consuming it can be to produce a piece of work, or that for some of us it is our career.
A predicament arises when we begin to ask if it is worth saying no. As much as we may want to 'stick to our guns' and say "well I can't do the job unless I get paid", it can actually help you get noticed and therefore lead to further work. Organisations such as D&AD do not offer cash prizes but provide placements and exposure to the design industry.
In my opinion, the less established you are, the more you may need to do for free. Once you gain some experience and more well known, you can be more selective. It is down to one's own judgement as to what may be excepted.
When speaking to Lord Whitney back on the 21st of November last year, they spoke a lot about working for free. It was something they have had to do a lot of, but once they had proved themselves, they would receive a job from the same people but then be payed for it. This shows that voluntary work can pay off.
