After having a photgraphy workshop with the fantastic Brian Spranklen, I managed to capture this dramatic shot of my cushion.
We took a look at the image I had found of a bottle of cider (in previous post) and tried to create something of a similar effect; and it took a while to get it right. The first photograph I took looked perfect when looking through the viewfinder but when it came up on screen it was far too dark, simply because our eyes can pick up so much more light and detail than a camera lens. So I had to feed some more hard light on to the cushion by raising it to a slightly higher angle and moving it closer ('Hard light' casts dark shadows and produces high contrast pictures with deep blacks and bright highlights).I also placed a reflector opposite to shine just a small amount of light on to the right hand side of the cushion, this is so you can still see its shape.
I am very pleased with the photograph and it captures the particularly 'moody' atmosphere I was going for. Working with Brian was an absolute pleasure and it was a real insight in to the world of photography. I do hope we may get the opportunity to work with him again some time.
